Ulyana Sergeenko - Spring/Summer 2012

Hello, lovelies! Did everyone have a wonderful weekend? This morning, I had originally planned to blog about my latest creation - a white eyelet version of Simplicity 1873 - but complications have arisen. Namely, the sleeves are an inch too small, because I was brilliant and neglected to alter the pattern piece as planned.

Luckily, all blogging hope is not lost. The lovely Garnet, of Ruby Satin, drew my attention to a very exciting fashion happening: Ulyana Sergeenko has a new Spring/Summer collection! Let's be honest: we'd all much rather look at her breathtaking creations than mine.

Her debut collection was a favorite among bloggers this past fall, including yours truly, and her follow-up effort does not disappoint. It's a curious, but wonderful, mix of old Hollywood glamour and Eastern European rustic chic. I've chosen some of my favorite looks from this gorgeous new collection:

The entire collection can be viewed at Vogue Russia, the source of these images. Which is your favorite? I'm rather torn between the emerald velvet dress and the blue floral circle skirt.

  1. Lovely I like the emerald velvet too and for the drama I like the black/charcoal dress with the overlays on the skirt. I also want to take that girl out for a large meal as she is way too skinny for my liking. I don't think it sells the clothes well either....

    1. Louise, that black dress really is divine, isn't it? I love the drama of this whole collection! Now, if only I had a gala to attend.

Also, you're very right. When you compare this collection to Lena Hoschek's, which I posted last week, how thin this model is becomes even more apparent. It's much easier to see how clothes look on women in Hoschek's collection, thanks to the curvier, more realistic models used.

  2. I would cheerfully kill for that swimsuit business, and the body to go with it. That grey gown is just too dramatic for words and I love the blue florals going on, very nice. I love how the proportions are out of balance, just a bit, it's interesting.

    1. Leah, me too! That swimsuit is just so wonderfully glamorous, isn't it? Even that one, the more I study it, has slightly exaggerated proportions. It makes everything so much more dramatic in this collection.

  3. Love it! Wow! I'm only disappointed in the way-too-thin model! These clothes were clearly designed for curvaceous women. Too bad the fashion industry can't embrace that.

    1. Nikki, you're too right. It's funny, isn't it, how striking a difference there is between this collection and the last I posted? Lena Hoschek used curvier, more realistic models, all of whom were gorgeous, and the clothes look better for it. This model is ethereal, yes, but hard to compare to a normal woman's body type.

  4. Oh WOW - what an amazing collection. A beautifully cinched waist never fails to appeal, but what gorgeous outfits.
I'm looking forward to seeing your dress - I'm a huge fan of eyelet!

    1. Poppy, I'm with you - a cinched waist is the key to my heart. I love how Sergeenko plays with that concept and exaggerated retro silhouettes in this collection. It's so glamorous!

Hopefully my eyelet dress is photo-worthy soon. I may whip up another dress first, if only to give myself a break, so I don't throw the whole thing against the wall. ;)

  5. It's absolutely thrilling to see so many outfits from this collection. I can only imagine what it must have been like seeing the garments on the runway, with the chiffon billowing and the full skirts swishing as the model walked.

    Sigh.

Oh, and I've actually just discovered the perfect teal green silk/cotton Radiance in my stash for that exquisite dress!

    Beautifully curated selection, as always!

    1. Garnet, oh, I would have killed to attend this show. I can only imagine how dramatic and wonderful these garments looked in motion. With the different textures Sergeenko uses, especially, it's the kind of collection that would be even better viewed in person.

Thank you again for posting the link to the collection! I'm so glad I didn't miss it. Also, I can't wait for your version of that dress. I'm so happy you have appropriate fabric - it's sewing fate!

  6. These fashions are gorgeous, but I am disappointed about the model. She is a beautiful lady, but likely in sub-zero sizing. How am I, as a consumer, supposed to have any idea what a fashion will look like on my body if the model looks nothing like me or most of the women purchasing the product?

In any case, I really like the drapey navy number and the plunge purple ballgown.

    1. Hannah Jean, I agree with you completely. The fashion industry has yet to receive the message that we prefer seeing clothes on more realistic body types - whether it's curvier, shorter, or more ethnically diverse, they're woefully out-of-touch with how their target market actually looks. I loved that the last collection I posted, Lena Hoschek's S/S 2012, used curvier, more realistic models. They were also gorgeous, yes, but showed off the clothes better for non-model women.

    1. Dixie, that swimsuit is amazing, isn't it? I'm not sure velvet and boning lend themselves well to swimming, but if it's that gorgeous, who cares? I'd do nothing but lounge around under an umbrella, if it meant wearing such a confection.

  11. Oh my. Why haven't I heard of this designer. I love every one of those pieces. Thank you for setting me up for the week with this inspiration. And good luck with the sleeves on your dress. I'm sure it will end up fabulous!
